Potential relevance to the human ageing process

Main reason for selection
Entry selected based on evidence linking the gene product to the regulation or control of genes previously linked to ageing
Description

PIK3CA plays a role in activating signaling cascades involved in cell growth, survival, proliferation, motility and morphology. MTOR is a downstream effector of phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and thus PIK3CA might be also involved in ageing.

In mice, suppression of the activity of the p110alpha isoform of PIK3CA preserved cardiac function and prevented many age-associated changes in the heart [2227]. PIK3CA is also an oncogene and has been implicated in several types of cancers.
