Age estimates using skeletochronology suggest that these animals can live over 50 years [1082], which is plausible. A female at least 55 years old was reported in captivity [1298]. In conditions of scarce food, growth and sexual maturity are delayed in these animals [0586]. One study found that mortality slightly increases with age [1150].
