One of the shortest-lived vertebrates, these animals have an annual lifecycle in that they incubate for 8-9 months, grow rapidly and reach sexual maturity in about 2 months and then a population-wide adult death is observed within 2-3 months; possible signs of ageing prior to death included a worsening body condition and loss of body mass [1077].
