- Observations
A captive female acquired as a juvenile in 1987 died in 2004 at an estimated 17.7 years of age. As observed in other birds, the most obvious manifestation of ageing was a thickening of the scutes on the legs and feet. Some russet, male-like colouration in the crissum (undertail coverts) and breast was also observed, presumably as a result of higher testosterone levels with age (Julie Zickefoose, pers. comm.). In the wild, these animals have been reported to live up to 10.9 years [0427].
