In captivity, these animals have been reported to live up to 38.5 years [0671]. Females appear to exhibit reproductive senescence and cease reproducing at about age 25 [0976]. A child Japanese monkey appeared to display signs of progeria without possessing any of the individual mutations responsible for major progeroid syndromes in humans. This monkey was the first primate model with sporadic symptoms of premature ageing [1195].
