Common name
epidermal growth factor

Potential relevance to the human ageing process

Main reason for selection
Entry selected based on evidence linking the gene product to the regulation or control of genes previously linked to ageing
Description

EGF stimulates the growth of several epidermal and epithelial cell types. It is also involved in differentiation [366]. Expression of EGF in transgenic mice causes stunted growth [367]. An attenuation of EGF signalling has been reported with age [346], but it is unclear whether these are causes or effects of ageing.
