Potential relevance to the human ageing process
- Main reason for selection
- Entry selected based on evidence directly linking the gene product to ageing in a mammalian model organism
- Description
MIF is involved in several processes, including in cell proliferation and inflammation. Its levels are elevated in long-lived mouse models, including in caloric restriction. Knocking out MIF in mice results in an extended lifespan (knockout mice live 16% longer than controls) and are even longer-lived under caloric restriction [3248]. These results suggest a potential role in ageing, though human studies are lacking.
