Potential relevance to the human ageing process
- Main reason for selection
- Entry selected based on evidence directly linking the gene product to ageing in a mammalian model organism
- Description
EFEMP1 encodes an extracellular matrix protein of unknown function. Knockout mice exhibited an early onset of ageing-associated phenotypes including reduced lifespan, decreased body mass and muscle and organ atrophy [1854]. In humans, a mutation in EFEMP1 has been associated with Malattia Leventinese, a disease similar to age-related macular degeneration [1889]. A role of EFEMP1 in ageing is plausible though further research is warranted to confirm or disprove this hypothesis.
