GenAge entry for S100B (Homo sapiens)
Gene name (HAGRID: 70)
- HGNC symbol
- S100B
- Aliases
- S100beta
- Common name
- S100 calcium binding protein B
Potential relevance to the human ageing process
- Main reason for selection
- Entry selected based on evidence linking the gene product to the regulation or control of genes previously linked to ageing
- Description
S100B is mostly expressed in glial cells where it controls neuronal and glial cell proliferation. Its expression levels change with age [453] and in Alzheimer's disease [452]. Mice overexpressing the human S100B show pathological changes in their brains [1166]. S100B may thus be involved in neurodegenerative disorders, but there is no evidence at present that S100B plays a major role in human ageing.
