GenAge entry for SST (Homo sapiens)
Gene name (HAGRID: 53)
- HGNC symbol
- SST
- Aliases
- SMST
- Common name
- somatostatin
Potential relevance to the human ageing process
- Main reason for selection
- Entry selected based on evidence linking the gene product to the regulation or control of genes previously linked to ageing
- Description
Somatostatin is an important regulator of endocrine and nervous system function [386]. It inhibits the release of GH1 probably through GHRH [1568]. Because its levels change with age, it is likely that age-related changes are affected or affect SST [385], and a role for SST in Alzheimer's disease has also been proposed [1664].
