GenAge entry for HIC1 (Homo sapiens)
Gene name (HAGRID: 253)
- HGNC symbol
- HIC1
- Aliases
- ZBTB29; ZNF901
- Common name
- hypermethylated in cancer 1
Potential relevance to the human ageing process
- Main reason for selection
- Entry selected based on evidence linking the gene product to the regulation or control of genes previously linked to ageing
- Description
HIC1 is a transcriptional repressor. It suppresses age-dependent development of cancer in mice together with TP53. HIC1 also forms a complex with SIRT1 that represses SIRT1 expression. Ageing increases promoter hypermethylation and epigenetic silencing of HIC1 [1582]. Therefore, HIC1 might play some role in ageing, though further studies are warranted.
