GenAge entry for MT-CO1 (Homo sapiens)
Gene name (HAGRID: 158)
- HGNC symbol
- MT-CO1
- Aliases
- COX1; COI; MTCO1
- Common name
- mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I
Potential relevance to the human ageing process
- Main reason for selection
- Entry selected based on evidence directly linking the gene product to ageing in a cellular model system
- Description
Encoded in the mitochondrial DNA, MT-CO1 catalyses the reduction of oxygen to water. COX1, a homologue of MT-CO1, has been related to longevity in the filamentous fungus Podospora anserina [207]. Mutations in the human MT-CO1 gene have been associated with several diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases [751]. Further research is necessary to understand whether MT-CO1 is involved in human ageing.
