GenAge entry for PIK3CA (Homo sapiens)
Gene name (HAGRID: 286)
- HGNC symbol
- PIK3CA
- Aliases
- PI3K
- Common name
- phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase, catalytic subunit alpha
Potential relevance to the human ageing process
- Main reason for selection
- Entry selected based on evidence linking the gene product to the regulation or control of genes previously linked to ageing
- Description
- PIK3CA plays a role in activating signaling cascades involved in cell growth, survival, proliferation, motility and morphology. MTOR is a downstream effector of phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and thus PIK3CA might be also involved in ageing. - In mice, suppression of the activity of the p110alpha isoform of PIK3CA preserved cardiac function and prevented many age-associated changes in the heart [2227]. PIK3CA is also an oncogene and has been implicated in several types of cancers.
